This is the most common wasted health habit in Indian kitchens: a spoon of whole alsi stirred into something every morning, for months, doing nothing at all.
The seed is not the problem. The hull is.
Short answer: Flax must be ground to do anything. The hull is indigestible, so whole seeds pass through unused. Grind a week's worth at a time and keep it in the fridge - ground flax goes rancid fast.

Why the whole seed does nothing
A flax seed is wrapped in a hard, smooth, water-resistant hull. It is built to survive being eaten by a bird and come out the other end intact enough to germinate - which is precisely what it does in a human gut.
Chewing helps a little and not much; the seeds are small and slippery and most of them go down whole. The lignans, the ALA and the soluble fibre that make flax worth eating are all inside that hull, and if it does not break, none of it is released.

How much and how often
One tablespoon of ground flax a day - about 10 grams. That carries roughly 2 grams of ALA, which covers an adult's daily need, and about 3 grams of fibre.
Two tablespoons is fine. Much beyond that and the fibre will make itself known, and flax also carries small amounts of compounds that are worth not overdoing. One spoon is the habit; there is no benefit to four.
Drink water with it. Flax fibre is the kind that absorbs liquid, and a large spoonful on a dry stomach is uncomfortable.

The storage problem nobody mentions
Ground flax goes rancid quickly. The oil that makes it valuable is exactly the oil that oxidises, and once the hull is broken that oil is exposed to air. At room temperature, ground flax is noticeably stale within two to three weeks and smells of fish or paint.
So the practical routine is: buy whole seed, grind a week's worth at a time in a dry grinder or a coffee mill, keep the powder in an airtight jar in the fridge, and keep the remaining whole seed in a cupboard where it will happily last a year.
Pre-ground flax sold in packets is convenient and is usually already past its best unless it has been refrigerated the whole way.
What to do with the powder
Ground flax has a mild, nutty, slightly earthy taste that disappears into most things. Stir it into curd, dal, or a glass of buttermilk. Add it to atta - a spoon per two rotis is undetectable. Sprinkle it over sabzi at the end.
What not to do is cook it hard. High heat for a long time degrades the ALA you went to the trouble of releasing. Add it late, or stir it into something already cooked.
Roasted whole alsi, lightly salted, is a genuinely good snack and a Rajasthani habit. Just understand that you are eating it for the taste, not for the omega-3.

How to grind and store a week of flax
- Measure a week at a time. Seven tablespoons of whole seed. More than that and the last of it will be stale before you reach it.
- Use a dry grinder or coffee mill. Short pulses. A long grind heats the seed and starts the oil off.
- Stop at a coarse powder. You want it broken, not pasted. Over-grinding turns it gummy.
- Into an airtight jar, into the fridge. Glass or steel, not a loose dabba. Air is the enemy here.
- Smell it before each use. Fresh ground flax smells faintly nutty. If it smells of fish or paint, it is finished - start again.

Questions people ask
Can I eat whole flax seeds?
You can, and they will mostly pass through undigested. The hull is built to survive a gut. For any nutritional benefit, grind them.
How much flax seed per day?
One tablespoon of ground seed, about 10 grams. That covers an adult's daily ALA need and adds about 3 grams of fibre.
How long does ground flax keep?
One to two weeks in an airtight jar in the fridge. At room temperature it is noticeably stale in two to three weeks.
Is roasted alsi as good as ground?
Roasted whole seed tastes better and is a good snack, but it is still whole - the hull is intact and the contents stay inside. Roast it for pleasure, grind it for benefit.
Can flax be cooked?
Light heat is fine. Long, high heat degrades the ALA. Add ground flax towards the end of cooking, or into something already made.
Flax or chia - which is better?
Flax carries more ALA and lignans; chia carries more fibre and does not need grinding. Chia is easier; flax is more concentrated. Many people keep both.
