How many khajoor a day, and which kind you should be buying

Dates are the one dry fruit where the daily number genuinely matters, because they are mostly sugar. That is not a reason to avoid them - it is a reason to know what you are eating.

And the question of which khajoor is really five different questions, because the varieties on a shop counter are not variations on one thing.

Short answer: Two to four soft dates a day is a normal amount - that is roughly 50 to 90 calories and a useful amount of potassium and fibre. They are high in sugar, so the number matters more here than with nuts.

Medjool - the large, soft, expensive one

The number, and why it is lower than for nuts

A medjool date carries about 65 calories and roughly 16 grams of sugar. A smaller kimia or fard is nearer 20 to 25 calories. So two to four a day, depending on size, is the sensible everyday amount.

That sugar is wrapped in fibre, which slows how fast it arrives, and dates carry a genuinely useful amount of potassium and magnesium. They are a better sweet thing than most sweet things. They are still a sweet thing.

Which variety for which job

Eating plain, as a sweet after a meal. Medjool if you want the best version of that experience and do not mind the price; kimia if you want eighty per cent of it for half the money.

A daily habit, two with morning tea. Fard or kalmi. Firm enough to not go sticky in a jar, cheap enough to not think about.

Ramadan, or eaten for religious reasons. Ajwa, which carries particular significance. They are small, firm and fairly dry - do not expect medjool softness and be disappointed.

Stuffing with a nut, or chopping into a sweet. Fard or kimia. Medjool works and is a waste.

Kharak is not a soft date that went hard

Kharak - also called chhuhara - is a date dried right down until it is hard and pale. It is sold alongside soft dates and is treated by many people as a cheap substitute, which is a misunderstanding.

It is its own food. Soaked overnight in milk it softens into something quite different from a fresh date, and it is the form that goes into winter panjiri and into ladoo. It also keeps for years rather than months, which is why it was the date that travelled through Rajasthan before refrigeration.

Buying kharak expecting medjool will disappoint. Buying it for what it is will not.

Dates and diabetes: the honest answer

Dates have a moderate glycaemic index - lower than white sugar, higher than most fruit. Small studies have found that one or two dates do not spike blood sugar the way an equivalent amount of plain sugar does, because of the fibre.

That is not permission. If you are managing diabetes, the right number of dates is a conversation with the person managing it with you, not a number off a website. What is safe to say is that dates are a better choice than a mithai and a worse choice than an almond.

Questions people ask

How many dates should I eat a day?

Two to four, depending on size. A medjool is about 65 calories; a small kimia or fard is nearer 25.

Which date is the healthiest?

There is no meaningful nutritional gap between the varieties. The differences are size, moisture and price. Pick on taste and on what you are doing with them.

Are dates good for diabetics?

They have a moderate glycaemic index and the fibre slows the sugar, but they are still high in sugar. This is a question for whoever manages your diabetes, with a number that applies to you.

What is the difference between khajoor and kharak?

Kharak is a date dried until hard. It keeps for years, is usually soaked in milk, and is the form used in panjiri and winter ladoo. A soft date is a different food.

How should dates be stored?

Soft dates in an airtight box in the fridge, where they keep six to twelve months. Kharak keeps for years at room temperature in a dry jar.

Do dates need to be washed?

Rinse them. They are dried in open air and handled a good deal. Pat dry before storing or they will go sticky.
