Living near Udaipur but not in it: where Salumbar households actually shop

Seventy kilometres is an awkward distance. It is too far to pop in for something you forgot and too close for the town to have developed everything a city has. Nearly every Salumbar household has worked out the same compromise, usually without ever articulating it.

Short answer: Salumbar sits about 70 km south-east of Udaipur, roughly two hours each way. That distance is the whole logic of how households here shop: monthly big trips to the city, and everything else locally.

What people drive to Udaipur for

The things that genuinely need a city: a hospital appointment, a bank matter, electronics, a showroom purchase, clothes for a wedding. And attached to those trips, the monthly grocery stock-up at a big store, because you are already there.

That pattern is efficient and it is also why the Udaipur trip tends to happen for a reason other than groceries. Nobody drives two hours each way for atta.

What does not survive the trip

The problem with the monthly city stock-up is that it suits packaged goods and suits nothing else.

Loose dry fruit bought in a city and then kept for a month in a Salumbar house, through a summer, in whatever bag it came in - that is how good kaju turns flat. Nuts go stale by oxidation, and a month of 40-degree afternoons does a lot of oxidising.

Whole spices have the same problem in slower form. Elaichi loses its aroma in heat. So does good pepper.

Which means the things worth buying locally and often are exactly the things that lose the most by being bought in bulk far away: anything loose, anything aromatic, anything you will use over weeks rather than days.

What a district headquarters changes

Salumbar became a district headquarters in 2023, carved out of Udaipur district. In practical terms that has meant more offices, more people posted here, and slowly, more of the services that used to require the drive.

It has not brought quick commerce and probably will not for a long while - that needs density, not administrative status. What it has brought is a larger, steadier set of households buying regularly, which is what lets a local shop hold proper range rather than only fast movers.

Which is the actual answer to "why can I get W320, W240 and tukda in Salumbar now": because enough people are buying for it to be worth stocking.

The sensible split

City, monthly: packaged goods, bulk staples, anything branded and sealed, anything you were going to buy anyway while you were there.

Local, as needed: dry fruit by weight, whole spices, anything aromatic, anything for a function, anything you want fresh, and anything you need today.

The second list is where the quality difference is actually noticeable, and it is also the list where a two-hour drive makes the least sense.
