Putting together a Diwali dry fruit box that is worth giving

Everyone has received the Diwali box with eight small compartments, each holding a disappointing amount, at least two of which are something nobody eats. It is possible to do better for the same money, and it mostly comes down to doing fewer things properly.

Short answer: A 500 g box wants four or five things, not eight. Two nuts people recognise at good grades, one sweet dried fruit, one seed or speciality, and nothing filling space. A box of five generous things beats a box of eight mean ones.

A twelve-nut mix, which is the easy answer

Fewer things, more of each

The eight-compartment box exists because it looks generous on a shelf. Opened, it is forty grams of each of eight things, which is a mouthful of each and a meal of none.

Four or five items at a hundred-plus grams each reads as a serious gift. It is also cheaper to pack, cheaper to buy, and far more likely to be eaten rather than tipped into a jar and forgotten.

If the box has to look full, use a smaller box. A tightly packed 500 gram box looks better than a loosely packed 750 gram one.

Where to spend and where not to

Spend on the kaju grade. This is the one place where size is genuinely the point. W240 or W180, whole, visibly larger than what people buy for themselves. It is the first thing anyone notices on opening the box.

Spend on green pista. Not because the taste is better but because the colour is what makes a box look expensive. Pishori or another green grade, even a small amount.

Do not spend on mamra badam. In a mixed box nobody can tell, and the money shows more in the cashew.

Do not spend on exotic nuts nobody eats. Brazil nuts and pecans look impressive and come back in the box. If you want a speciality item, chilgoza or jumbo anjeer are things people are actually pleased to find.

The two shortcuts that look cheap

Broken grades in a gift box. Tukda is the right purchase for mithai and the wrong one here. The whole value of a gift box is that it contains things the recipient would not casually buy for themselves, and broken cashew is not that.

Filling with roasted chana or salted peanuts. Both are perfectly good foods and both read immediately as padding. If the budget is tight, make a 250 gram box of good things rather than a 500 gram box of mixed things.

A small honest box is a better gift than a large padded one, and everybody receiving it knows the difference.

Ordering for Diwali in Salumbar

For more than twenty boxes, order ten days ahead. Diwali week is the single busiest week of the year for a dry fruit shop and packing is the bottleneck, not stock.

Send the specification rather than a list: "Thirty boxes, 500 grams each, kaju W240 150, badam 150, pista 80, anjeer 80, akhrot 40. Delivery on the 18th." That is a complete order and it can be priced immediately.

We pack to whatever split you name. If you would rather we suggest one to a budget per box, send the budget and the number of boxes and we will come back with a proposal and a price before anything is weighed.

Delivery inside Salumbar is free, and bulk orders go out on the date you name rather than the date you order.

Questions people ask

What should go in a Diwali dry fruit box?

Four or five things at generous weights rather than eight small ones. Typically whole cashew, almonds, green pistachio, a sweet dried fruit like anjeer or dates, and one speciality item.

How much dry fruit in a gift box?

250 g, 500 g and 1 kg are the common sizes. 500 g with five items at 40 to 150 g each is the one that reads best.

Which kaju grade for a gift box?

W240 or W180, whole. This is the single job where the grade is visible and worth paying for.

How far ahead should I order Diwali boxes?

Ten days for more than twenty boxes. The constraint is packing time during the busiest week of the year, not stock.

Can you pack to my own list and budget?

Yes. Send the number of boxes and either the exact split or a per-box budget, and we will price it before anything is weighed.

Do you deliver gift boxes in Salumbar?

Yes, free inside Salumbar, on the date you name.
